DIY Up-cycled Scarf Wreath for Spring

DIY Up-cycled Wool Scarf as a Wreath for Spring

A spring wreath made from and up-cycled wool scarf. I made this spring wreath for my booth at CHA. I brought it home and added a couple little things before hanging it on my front door. With the break in the weather and the return of spring it adds just the right pop of color to bring a smile to my face when returning home. (Now I just need to paint that door. ;)

Making the Base of the Wreath Form...

The base of the wreath I made from recycled cardboard. I used a large bowl and a small bowl to trace two circles on the piece of cardboard to form a donut shape. I then cut out the donut shape and wrapped it with a wool scarf. The edges do not have to be perfect as it will be completely hidden.

The Up-Cycled Wool Scarf...

The patterns in the up-cycled wool scarf wreath. The scarf I chose for its pattern and its sentimentality. (It was my grandmothers! I love the pattern, but the color doesn't look so great with my skin tones, so I never wore it.) This was a great way for me to enjoy the scarf and remember my grandmother without having to wear -or cut up- her scarf. If you don't have a scarf you like you can find lots of old scarfs at the Thrift store. Pick one with a color or a pattern that speaks to you. I wrapped it around and around overlapping the edges several inches and then tucked the end in. I did not use any hot glue and it stayed just fine.

The Up-Cycled Wool Flowers...

Pink and purple wool roses on an up-cycled wool scarf wreath. The flowers were made from leftover up-cycled wool sweater pieces that I turned into ponytail hats. Here is a link to that article if you care to make a ponytail hat. The wool roses are made by cutting a rectangle of felted wool and rolling it up. Terry showed me at CHA. Here is a link to her blog and how to make these... Totem Poppet Duck as a blue bird standing on a fern on up-cycled wool scarf wreath. The fern curls are edging from a old wool seater as well. I used a dab of hot glue to attach these.

Making the Blue Birds...

Blue birds are such a sign of spring to me. I always think of the quote, " The sky rides on the back of the blue bird." by Henry David Thoreau when I see one. To make the blue bird family, I used EyeConnect Crafts Totem Poppet Duck. I painted them using acrylic paint and assembled them with our 1/6" brass eyelets. Totem Ducks painted as blue birds on a up-cycled wool scarf wreath.

Hanging the Wreath...

A while back I found some awesome steam punk garters online. They have little gears attached to black elastic which closes with two snaps in the back. I never wear them, so using them as hangers on the wreaths was a great way to get to enjoy them more. Sometimes you have look for ways to use what you have in a new and unique way.
